Boy, do I love our monthly group meetings. I am still cherishing the full feeling of being with last night’s group at the monastery. The congruences that were brought forward were so remarkable. The words “Big”, “Consent”, and “Presence” came up often. I’ll defer to allowing members that were there to share additional context if they want to bring that forward.
But I was personally asked if my upcoming trip to Snowmass, CO was “for work or vacation”. Up until that exact moment, those were, indeed, the only two options I’ve ever classified a trip as. I was stumped because I realized that Snowmass was “neither”. So then, what is it?
I tried to articulate how I was looking forward to it being a time for me to go deeper into resting in my relationship with God. Even “retreat” didn’t sound like the right descriptor. I don’t want to “leave” anything, even temporarily (OK, except internet and cell phone reception which fortunately they DON’T have!). But “going deeper” felt very true.
This afternoon while I was reading the word occurred to me. I am looking forward to the “extended Sabbath” that Snowmass is gifting me. Honoring “holy leisure” is important in the Benedictine Tradition. In addition to Stability, Stewardship, and Community, “Awareness of God” is a cornerstone Benedictine value that we practice in Benedictine CARE; “We believe the Divine Presence is everywhere” RB 19. This is what I hear to fully embrace in Snowmass. To go deeper into and rest within the presence of.
How exciting to have a new classification of travel/time off. :)
As travel for all of us increases with nicer weather, I’d love to hear how that time, even just moments within a trip, has shifted and fallen under a new classification for you.
